When These Mountains Burn by David Joy

Finished this one today. A stunningly well-written book (that prose!) that tells the fictional story of Raymond as he watches his son struggle with addiction. We also get the perspectives of wide range of characters involved in an illegal drug operation in western North Carolina.

The storytelling style is entirely engrossing, and I listened to almost the entire audiobook in one sitting. The narrater, MacLeod Andrews, did a great job performing the novel. Though, I can’t speak for the accuracy of the accents and would love to hear what western North Carolinians think of his performance in that regard.

I’m definitely picking up Joy’s backlist. Any recommendations for what book of Joy’s I should pick up next?

Huge thanks to Annette Saunooke Clapsaddle, Leah Hampton, and Meredith McCarroll for recommending this book to me on our author interviews on Reading Women this year.
